The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for an Animal Health Officer – Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) Preparedness, to join our Biosecurity Division within the Department of Primary Industries and Regions.

In this role, you will play a key role in strengthening South Australia’s biosecurity systems by supporting livestock industries, securing production and maintaining market access. You will work collaboratively with industries, regional communities, and government partners to strengthen South Australia’s preparedness for emergency animal disease (EAD) threats.

Be part of a dynamic team focused on manage the risks to South Australia posed by animal pests and diseases while strengthening the state’s ability to respond to emerging biosecurity challenges.

How You’ll Make a Difference

As an Animal Health Officer in the EAD Preparedness Team, you will support the EAD Preparedness program to build capability across industry and the community and play a key role in protecting South Australia’s livestock industries and market access.

You will:

  • Build trusted networks with regional communities and industry
  • Develop and deliver industry and region-specific EAD awareness and preparedness materials and training
  • Strengthen local capacity in disease detection, prevention and response
  • Support regional planning, strategies and preparedness exercises
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to reduce biosecurity risks
  • Contribute to emergency response readiness and training

About You

You are a proactive, community-focused professional with strong technical capability and a passion for biosecurity.

You will bring:

  • A degree in veterinary or animal health science (essential)
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Ability to work across regions and build trusted relationships
  • Experience or interest in emergency animal disease response (desirable)

Special Conditions

  • Successful applicant will be required to satisfactorily complete a National Police Check (NPC) prior to being made an offer of employment.
  • Full time opportunity up to May 2027

Requirements

  • Possession of a current driver’s license and willingness to drive
  • Out of hours work and inter / intrastate travel may be required
  • Australian residency or current works permit is required (responsibility of applicant to provide evidence of a current work permit)

Qualifications

  • Essential: Degree in veterinary or animal health science or equivalent
  • Desirable: Demonstrable experience in emergency animal disease response

Remuneration

PO2 - $91,565 min - $106,074 max per annum, plus superannuation
