Community and Aboriginal Partnerships

Our Community and Aboriginal Partnerships Division helps to build community safety and wellbeing by providing support and services to children, young people and families, including those involved with the youth justice system, remote Aboriginal communities, and people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The division also supports DHS's Closing the Gap commitments.

About Us

Community Youth Justice (CYJ) provides statutory supervision and case management services to children and young people who are subject to supervised youth justice mandates within South Australia. CYJ works in partnership with internal partners and other government and non-government services to promote community safety and meet the identified support needs of young people. This includes assisting young people to plan and achieve goals and maintain compliance with court mandates. Our mission is to provide focused, responsive and culturally appropriate services and programs to young people that encourage pro-social behaviours by developing partnerships which strengthen connections, support re-integration and build community safety.

The Case Manager position carries out a range of diverse professional tasks and functions, including:
• addressing offending behaviour through the application of relevant knowledge, skills, practice frameworks, methods, and applying ethical decision-making models for complex and/or high-risk children and young people within the constraints of the statutory environment
• attendance at the youth court as a DHS representative and provide appropriate targeted responses from information and assessments to improve outcomes for young people by promoting alternatives to detention and integration into the community through liaison with relevant stakeholders, young people and their families in negotiating the legal system
• supervising Statutory Youth Justice mandates and providing quality through-care case management to children and young people
• assessment, analysis, reporting and recording on offending behaviours and compliance
• strengthening child/young person and family functioning to support non-offending behaviour.

This is a multi-classified role as either an AHP1 or PO1 with classification determined by qualifications and experience. 

Special Conditions

National Police Check if new to the Department and a satisfactory Employment-related Screening Check where this is required for the role.
Successful applicant will be required to provide evidence of completion of Child Safe Environments for Children and Young People full day training course or evidence of enrolment.
Successful applicant will be required to hold a Working with Children Check (WWCC) prior to being employed and maintain a DHS WWCC during employment.
Must hold a current Australian issued Driver's Licence (equivalent to minimum class ‘C' - South Australian), which must be maintained. Incumbent must be willing and able to drive all government vehicles within their licence classification during the course of their duties.
Intrastate and/or interstate travel, which may involve overnight absences, may be required.
Some out of hours' work may be required.
Duration: Term up to five (5) months.

Essential Qualifications

AHP1: Incumbent should hold an appropriate degree or equivalent qualification which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers; or Persons of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, who have the appropriate background and skills but do not have the essential qualification, may apply for and be engaged/assigned to the role of Social Worker and will be entitled to apply for any Allied Health Professional roles requiring a qualification in Social Work within the Department Human Services.
PO1: Incumbent should hold an appropriate tertiary qualification in community services, sociology, criminology, social sciences, human services, health or a related field.
