About the Opportunity

The Small Business Commission SA (SBC) is an independent statutory Office of the South Australian Government within the Attorney-General's Department.

The functions of the office are to:

  • Facilitate alternative dispute resolution processes between small businesses, and between small businesses and state or local government.
  • Advocate on behalf of the small business community, or a section of it, regarding collective issues.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and engage with small businesses to provide information and guidance.
  • Regulate by administering and enforcing legislative powers and responsibilities assigned to the Small Business Commissioner.
  • Deliver a fair, timely and consistent services to, and on behalf of, South Australian small businesses.

About the Business

The Small Business Commission Advisor is responsible for assessing enquiries, complaints and disputes received in accordance with legislation administered by SBC. This includes undertaking detailed case management of complex and sensitive matters, providing pre-mediation assistance, facilitating negotiated outcomes between parties, and conducting investigations where required. The role involves gathering and analysing evidence, liaising with stakeholders, and making well‑reasoned recommendations to the Commissioner regarding appropriate action, including enforcement and regulatory responses, in line with relevant legislation, government and SBC policies.

The Advisor plays a key role in dispute resolution by supporting parties through negotiation and, where necessary, recommending referral to mediation. They assist in formalising outcomes through settlement documentation and ensure that resolutions are fair, practical and capable of withstanding scrutiny.

The Small Business Commission Advisor also provides expert, timely and accurate advice to small business owners and stakeholders on complex and sensitive matters, helping to build understanding of legal obligations and rights. In addition, the role contributes to the continuous improvement of the Office’s processes, practices and advisory services, including the development of policies, procedures and best practice guidance. The Advisor works collaboratively across the organisation and with external stakeholders, contributes to projects and priority initiatives, and supports a culture of professionalism, continuous learning and high-quality service delivery.

Special Conditions for Employment

Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicants will be provided further information if an interview is requested. Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) under any circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing so will not be recoverable from the AGD.
