Overview:

The Deputy Chief Psychiatrist is an appropriately qualified medical professional who has the clinical experience, knowledge and skills to assume a leadership role within the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist by undertaking the role Deputy Chief Psychiatrist using delegated powers of the Chief Psychiatrist described under Section 90 of the Mental Health Act 2009 and delegated under the provisions of Section 91 of that Act.

The Deputy Chief Psychiatrist also undertakes duties to support the Chief Psychiatrist meet responsibilities under the Suicide Prevention Act 2021. The incumbent will be responsible for the provision of high-level input and advice and as Deputy will be expected to undertake any or all the roles of the Chief Psychiatrist under delegation. This includes:

• Promoting continuous improvement in the organisation and delivery of mental health services in South Australia.
• Monitoring the treatment of voluntary inpatients and involuntary patients and the use of restrictive practices in relations to such patients.
• Monitoring the administration of the Mental Health Act and the standard of mental health care provided in South Australia.
• Preparing advice for the Minister on issues related to mental health and reporting to the Minister any matters of concern related to the care or treatment of patients.
• With respect to standards issued by the Chief Psychiatrist, to draft and consult on standards to improve the delivery of mental health services.
• Undertaking inspections of the premises and operations of any hospital that is an incorporated hospital under the Health Care Act 2008
• Undertaking investigations of individual consumer issues as requested by the Chief Psychiatrist
• Providing advice on clinical matters as they relate to the safety and quality of care for consumers.

Criminal History Screening Requirement

• A ‘National Police Certificate’ NPC (also known as a ‘Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check’ NCCHC) for employment involving no contact with vulnerable groups is required for this position (general employment).
• A DHS ‘Working With Children Check’ (WWCC) is required for this position.

 

Immunisation Risk for this position is Category C (minimal patient contact).

SA Health Services are required to implement the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination policy in the workplace.
