Overview:
The Principal Category Manager is responsible for managing sourcing activities related to a designated category to ensure value for money is realised, contracts deliver the required outcomes and risks are appropriately managed across SA Health through the procurement process.
The key outcomes for this role are:
- Strategies are executed that enable SA Health operating through effective procurement and category management.
- Procurement and negotiation strategies comply with SA Public Sector policy requirements and identify control measures to effectively manage SA Health’s commercial risk.
- High level procurement services are provided to stakeholders that facilitate value for money outcomes and the procurement of commercially sound deliverables.
- Procured goods and services that meet the business requirements of SA Health.

Criminal History Screening Requirement
- A ‘National Police Certificate’ NPC (also known as a ‘Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check’ NCCHC) for employment involving no contact with vulnerable groups is required for this position (general employment).
Immunisation Risk for this position is Category C (minimal patient contact).
SA Health Services are required to implement the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination policy in the workplace.
Special Conditions
- An appropriate tertiary qualification in procurement, commerce, finance, economics, business management, law or equivalent.
- The ability to build credibility and rapport with senior stakeholders both within SA Health and outside, in such a way as to develop trust and cooperation. including the ability to design and execute stakeholder communication so that expectations are effectively managed.
- Ability to develop and execute negotiation plans with external stakeholders, such as suppliers, so as to realise procurement objectives.
- Track record of facilitating teams through the procurement process, from identification of spend patterns, identification of business needs, translation of those needs into appropriate procurement objectives, developing effective procurement strategies, and managing subsequent provider performance, whilst maintaining a customer focus.
- Knowledge of category management principles, tools and techniques and of the principles of Australian Contract Law and their application to commercial contracting.
