SA Police is seeking applications from First Nations Australians who want to make a real difference in local communities.

Community Police (Community Constables) provide a specialist support in the delivery of policing services to First Nations communities, the broader community and to specific policing operations/incidents throughout the State. Community Constables contribute to the prevention and detection of crime and the preservation of law and order while strengthening relationships between community and police.

Community Constables actively participate as a support role to police in operational policing duties as well as undertake community liaison and engagement activities.  Community Constables enhance SAPOL’s service delivery to communities through improved relationships and mutual understanding.

About the role:

As a Community Constable you will benefit from fully paid training with SA Police while undertaking a contemporary First Nations informed training program specific to the community police role. Your training will combine studies in law, policy and procedure with practical, operational and physical training.

As a full-time Community Constable, you will use your cultural knowledge and skills combined with SA Police training and operational experience to support and build connections between police and communities.

Some of the key tasks you will perform in this role include:

  • Provide advice on contemporary and historical cultural issues and on community activities to increase understanding, awareness to enhance police service delivery
  • Provide a support role to police in operational responses, attending and evaluating incidents, providing a specialised cultural resource, conduct enquiries, undertake preliminary investigations and other duties as required
  • Perform directed policing activities to assist in preventing and detecting crime, maintaining law and order and assisting members of the community
  • Provide advice and support to police and community to achieve the safe resolution of incidents
  • Assist police in the planning and conduct of police operations and investigations by providing cultural support, advice and intelligence relating to community
  • Provide specialist assistance with searching for missing persons, conducting enquiries with regard to community members, engaging with victims and offenders in a culturally specific advisory role and support role when required
  • Report or arrest offenders within limitations of powers and training provided
  • Serve summons and executing warrants where cultural expertise can be of assistance and is deemed appropriate
  • Participate in the Juvenile Justice System and court diversion programs where special knowledge of culture will assist the process for police, offenders and communities
  • Attend community events and engage with community groups and agencies on community issues and provide advice and assistance to police on problem solving initiatives and intervention strategies
  • Assist police with the development and co-design of strategic and mutually beneficial partnerships to implement crime reduction, programs and initiatives
  • Contribute to the content and aiding in the delivery of culturally specific training programs
  • Perform station and cell duties to facilitate an accessible and culturally safe service, assisting police in providing security, welfare, control and management of prisoners where cultural expertise can be of assistance and is deemed appropriate
  • Undertake an active role in traffic policing and road safety campaigns.

Eligibility:

To serve as a Community Constable, you must be:

  • 17 years or older at the time of application
  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Able to meet medical, fitness and psychometric requirements
  • Hold a C class (car) Australian Driver’s Licence
  • Able to complete operational training and be willing to carry and use operational safety equipment, including a firearm
  • Demonstrate an ability to engage within First Nations communities.

Country and interstate applicants will be able to conduct the initial stages of the application process remotely and if successful, the training program incorporates accommodation costs in Adelaide for the modules of the Community Constable Development Program held at the SA Police Academy, Taperoo.
