Role Purpose 

The Infrastructure & Cloud Engineer  provides senior-level technical leadership in the design, operation, and evolution of the SACE Board’s cloud and hybrid ICT environment. 

Operating with a high degree of autonomy and professional judgement, the role is responsible for: 

  • Ensuring the ongoing stability, security, and performance of critical production systems 
  • Providing solution architecture and authoritative technical advice aligned to SA Government technical and security frameworks. 
  • Leading initiatives to modernise legacy, virtualised systems into cloud‑native solutions 
  • Influencing technology direction in alignment with whole‑of‑government strategies and standards 

The role includes responsibility for after‑hours changes, patching, and incident response, and acts as a senior escalation point for complex technical issues. 

Key Responsibilities 

Senior Cloud & Infrastructure Operations 

  • Lead and oversee the day‑to‑day operation of Azure-based infrastructure and platform services within the DTF tenancy 
  • Act as the senior technical escalation point for complex incidents, outages, and performance issues 
  • Plan and execute after‑hours changes, patching, and maintenance activities, ensuring risk is managed and services remain available 
  • Ensure environments meet security, compliance, and governance requirements, including ISMF, PSPF, and South Australian Government ICT policies 
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve reliability, resilience, performance, and cost optimisation 

Solution Architecture & Technical Authority 

  • Provide authoritative solution architecture, design, and assurance for infrastructure and application platforms 
  • Translate complex business and technical requirements into secure, scalable Azure solutions 
  • Define and maintain technical standards, patterns, and reference architectures 
  • Provide expert advice to senior stakeholders, project boards, and governance forums 
  • Mentor and guide other technical staff, uplifting capability across the team 

Cloud Modernisation & Project Leadership 

  • Lead and deliver complex technical initiatives to modernise legacy, virtualised applications, transitioning them to cloud‑native architectures 
  • Determine appropriate strategies (re‑platform, refactor, re‑architect) based on risk, value, and business need 
  • Drive adoption of platform services, managed services, and modern architectural patterns 
  • Champion infrastructure‑as‑code, automation, and DevOps practices to improve delivery outcomes 
  • Ensure solutions are operationally supportable, secure, and aligned to whole‑of‑government direction 

Stakeholder Engagement & Governance 

  • Work collaboratively with business units, vendors, DTF, and other government agencies 
  • Contribute to ICT planning, roadmaps, and investment proposals 
  • Prepare high‑quality technical documentation, briefings, and recommendations for senior audiences 

Essential Capabilities & Experience 

  • Extensive hands‑on experience delivering and supporting enterprise‑grade Microsoft Azure solutions 
  • Demonstrated experience working within a shared or centrally managed Azure tenancy, preferably within government 
  • Proven ability to operate as a senior technical specialist, exercising sound judgement and leadership 

Strong experience across:  

  • Azure networking, identity (Entra ID/Azure AD), compute, storage, and security services 
  • Hybrid and integrated environments 
  • Experience supporting mission‑critical production systems, including after‑hours support arrangements 
  • Demonstrated experience leading cloud modernisation initiatives 
  • Well‑developed communication skills, with the ability to influence and advise senior stakeholders 

Desirable Experience 

  • Infrastructure‑as‑code  
  • Azure DevOps, GitHub, CI/CD pipelines 
  • Container platforms (AKS), serverless, or event‑driven architectures 
  • Experience with South Australian Government ICT standards, ISMF, and security governance 
  • Microsoft certifications (e.g. Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Azure Administrator) 

Special Conditions

  • Some out-of-hours work.
  • Intrastate travel to regional and remote locations / interstate travel may be required.
  • A current driver’s licence is desirable.
  • The incumbent works under the SACE Board of South Australia Act 1983.
  • An intense time of activity within the SACE Board of South Australia occurs between October and December.  For some roles, the incumbent would not normally be able to take planned leave during this period.
  • Appointment is subject to a satisfactory Working with Children Check from the Department of Human Services and in accordance with the SACE Board policy.

Remuneration

ASO7 classification level currently $112,163 - $121,246 per annum plus super 

This is a term vacancy up to 2 years.
